<br />
Ahhhh....a movie about a murderously psychotic film geek. (Yeah, yeah...I saw the Scream movies) Fade to Black is the story of Eric Binford, a film junkie who gets pushed a little too far by almost everyone in his life.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK_tfdwU0eMxSHhQkCfN_N1d25TdxOmANy3NEL1AnDn2l0EglcgM46Uhihf5aoxgo6QzCRAUVE3JchpXofxvp96lth8w-9nOiVtvPaIxUozKOJHZ6K5WxkRH3b9E7p2RnjgR9Tq7Hlptjs/s1600/fadetoblacktopsuse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgK_tfdwU0eMxSHhQkCfN_N1d25TdxOmANy3NEL1AnDn2l0EglcgM46Uhihf5aoxgo6QzCRAUVE3JchpXofxvp96lth8w-9nOiVtvPaIxUozKOJHZ6K5WxkRH3b9E7p2RnjgR9Tq7Hlptjs/s320/fadetoblacktopsuse.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Eric gets dissed by his aunt, his boss, his coworkers, a movie producer
and a Marilyn Monroe-esque young tender. What else can a film geek do
but dress up like his favorite movie characters and start murdering? </div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
It's not the greatest movie in the world, but I enjoyed it. I've enjoyed
it for quite a few years, now. It was made during a time when being a
film geek wasn't really all that cool. Not like now. I'm at my
coolness apex, right now. I walk in the club and everyone's
like,..."Hell yeah!" All you film geeks know what
I'm talkin' about. Livin' la vida loca!<br />

Listen up Hollywood. You've remade everything else pre-1990. Fans are begging for this remake. Well, I am, anyway. </div>

One is a regular bear who kills. The other is a genetically deformed bear who kills. Either way, you win!<br />
<br />
Grizzly (1976)<br />
A 30th Anniversary Double-Disc Special Edition!!! You are not worthy. Jaws with claws, indeed. There's not much to talk about. It's all right there for you. Bear kills, bear is hunted down, mankind is saved from the wrath of mother nature. <br />

Prophecy (1979)<br />
If anyone thought John Frankenheimer was at his lowest when he gave the world his remake of The Island of Dr Moreau (starring Val Kilmer and Vito Corleone),...they might be right. However, never let it be said that Fankenheimer was afraid to scrape the bottom of the barrel on more than one occasion. This time he enlists the talents of Adrian Balboa and Armand Assante. Corporations are raping the planet for the benefit of mankind (as they are wont to do), mother nature suffers and pays us back in spades. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFxh180I2Nz7xpIMgpWFBRupGwz3vHFkEBALVcU-mlxbnndQUuO8p8pH9QhyYH88EX91Le70gc75w-fSiwdhWz3GboKNYJCviOVuhng6yT6IzlLq-MfqrH6WBc9rOABHumoAyFn99Jm_9V/s1600/prophecy-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="167" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFxh180I2Nz7xpIMgpWFBRupGwz3vHFkEBALVcU-mlxbnndQUuO8p8pH9QhyYH88EX91Le70gc75w-fSiwdhWz3GboKNYJCviOVuhng6yT6IzlLq-MfqrH6WBc9rOABHumoAyFn99Jm_9V/s320/prophecy-2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Frankenheimer does his best to give us some rich and sprawling camera work throughout this film. Yeah, yeah...trees, nature, lakes...(sigh). Get to the monster, already! You can fast forward through some of the more artistically inclined shots and shave about 20 minutes off of this gem.<br />
<br />
So much fun. This is what Saturday afternoons were made for. Enjoy. <div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I can sit through twenty or so movies knowing full well that most of them are prolly gonna suck,...as long as I can find that one diamond. The Devils is that diamond. And what a diamond it is. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGfkzRbpetpbrQbkyRWUbQkakRMduHAwihkjJsKn0MScy-htBwkvO-N9sE_eSy370pqY5fqTzgjpYu8yo7wL6-JWslnUagsIDgPNKsENn2iYX7KgJNINYXF2hbTaAEWFRRbcUARCDw8e2-/s1600/title_the_devils_DVD_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="134" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGfkzRbpetpbrQbkyRWUbQkakRMduHAwihkjJsKn0MScy-htBwkvO-N9sE_eSy370pqY5fqTzgjpYu8yo7wL6-JWslnUagsIDgPNKsENn2iYX7KgJNINYXF2hbTaAEWFRRbcUARCDw8e2-/s320/title_the_devils_DVD_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Devils stars Oliver Reed and Vanessa Redgrave. Based on historical accounts and heavily stylized, this movie will blow you away. Reed plays rock star priest Father Urbain Grandier, (The David Lee Roth of The Cloth, if you will...Will you?) in 17th century France. As the governor of an independent province in France, Grandier does right by his peeps, but to much of the townsfolks chagrin, he loves the sexy time. Redgrave plays the Mother Superior Jeanne at the local convent and she loves rock n roll. And by rock n roll, I mean Grandier. Grandier gets married and Jeanne lashes out by claiming that Grandier is in league with satan and is practicing witchcraft. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEgs8GyCiS_3WnmXrDT0d-Cts9HsIHssShzkmSdaYwUcao1bFh9RoIWXHNx_RktAWk7Ymqwk6ld0A9DXy2f0sBFa6mjiTAPVEncuMGqCnZ2fxRlweaY414lhERAdhFO8coZQZ_C8Gr-c3/s1600/thedevils1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtEgs8GyCiS_3WnmXrDT0d-Cts9HsIHssShzkmSdaYwUcao1bFh9RoIWXHNx_RktAWk7Ymqwk6ld0A9DXy2f0sBFa6mjiTAPVEncuMGqCnZ2fxRlweaY414lhERAdhFO8coZQZ_C8Gr-c3/s320/thedevils1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The Church and State seize the opportunity to defame and oust Grandier from his position in order to consolidate their control over France. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
Over the top and out of control, this movie would make a great double bill with A Clockwork Orange. The Devils should be screened first, if that tells you anything. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I have a couple of copies of this movie that I "found" on the interwebs. One is crappy and uncut and the other is pretty good quality and censored. Watched them both. Good luck finding this one since it's pretty much unavailable other than the edited VHS. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I would resort to witchcraft to see an uncut blu ray release announced. </div>

<br />
I don't actually know what is involved in the process of investigating a crime. Usually, what we get from most hollywood films ends up being a little too exciting and action packed to be believed. Sure it's entertaining and makes for great movie watching, but the pros probably roll their eyes when they watch Se7en, Heat or The Departed. It's kinda like when real boxers watch Rocky. <br />
<br />
Having said that, what we get with The Laughing Policeman is probably the most authentic and accurate depiction of police procedurals, short of a documentary, that you will find. Well, at least what I believe to be an accurate depiction.<br />

<br />
Walter Matthau stars in the third of his trilogy of 70's crime films which included Charley Varrick and The Taking of Pelham 123. Unless you are a huge police procedural head, this will probably be the least entertaining of the bunch for you. It's got it's draggy wait-and-see parts. It's got it's dead ends and red herrings. The slaughter at the beginning is probably the most exciting actiony part.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
But wait, there's more. We get Bruce Dern at his slimy assholey best (this was probably a preperatory role for his work in The Driver). The Iron Eagle, himself, Louis Gossett Jr is in attendance. We get some good old fashioned 70's racism. The obligatory 70's car chase, which is good to watch for the sake of reference but not so hot on the excitement scale. Anthony Zerbe!, AND,...a yound tender scantily clad Cathy Lee Crosby for a little ocular pleasure. That's Incredible!<br />

Slaughter on a bus. One of the victims is Matthau's partner, who was on vacation at the time. What was he doing on a bus? Was he following someone? Was someone following him? How are the passengers connected. Will Matthau break character and crack a joke? All this and more will be answered when you watch the ironically titled, The Laughing PolicemanDeaftonguehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15441130853378703643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415982615207379345.post-28629807533173756122013-02-05T15:57:00.003-08:002013-02-06T18:38:17.511-08:0011 Harrowhouse (1974)<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
11 Harrowhouse is a british heist comedy. Or, it's a british heist drama with a few chuckles, depending on which version you watch. The movie stars Charles Grodin and it has been screened with and without his restrospective commentary which runs the length of the film. With the commentary (which is the version I saw), you get plenty of Grodin's trademark deadpan observations and narrative, throughout. Removing the commentary leaves the viewer with a much more serious heist movie experience.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Unted_zps391f2caa.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="139" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Unted_zps391f2caa.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Grodin plays Chesser, a small time diamond buyer/seller who stumbles on an offer that's too good to be true. He is offered the opportunity to oversee the purchase and cutting of an obscenely large diamond. During the delivery of said diamond, Chesser gets robbed. To make things right, Chesser (now a million dollars in the hole) has to pull off a major diamond heist for his client.<br />

<br />
The cast in this movie should have guaranteed some measure of success, but we all know that's not always the case. Candice Bergen, James Mason and Sir John Gielgud all lend the movie a little extra touch of class. The overall tone of the movie reminds me of Foul Play (1978) with Chevy and Goldie, just to give you an idea of what you're in for.<br />
<br />
Overall, 11 Harrowhouse was an enjoyable watch, but i don't think it's gonna cause anyone to rewrite their top 50 movies of all time. I'd give it a 6 out of 10. Man, what a great flick! The Nickel Ride stars Jason Miller as Cooper (The Key Man), a mid level mob boss who is on the verge of securing a block of empty warehouses which the LA mob will use to house stolen goods. He just can't seem to get all of his ducks in a row. </div>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This movie reminds me a lot of The Friends of Eddie Coyle. You've got your main character doing everything in his power to get over this last mid life mob hump and he's just not getting the right cards for a winning hand. Father Karras does such a great job of conveying the concern, worry, distrust and paranoia that comes with having to deliver for the mob and fearing the cost of failure. As the movie moves forward, you really get the sense of dread and mounting tension as Cooper starts to run out of time. What gives the film an extra boost is that you're never really sure if Cooper's concerns are real or imagined. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bo Hopkins good ole boy character really shines against Millers stoic and intense character and their exchanges are highlights of the film. Also stars Linda Haynes, Victor French (almost unrecognizable sans facial hair) and John Hillerman. Really well done and deliberately paced, it was great to finally get to watch this one. <br />
Every grown man wants to grow up to be Robert Mitchum. Mitchum plays Philip Marlowe, Private Detective, on the case. Farewell is a great film noir with all the noir trappings. Cool lines, tough guys, dames, shootouts, corrupt cops, dead bodies, exposition and booze.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Untitled_zps736307d2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="179" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Untitled_zps736307d2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
After 7 years in jail, a tough guy (Jack O'Halloran - General Zod's muscle from Superman) hires Marlowe to find his lady. Wrong turns lead to dead ends and, the next thing you know, Marlowe has got his hands full with multiple investigations that all seem to be connected, somehow. <br />

Charlotte Rampling plays the main dame and tries her best to be ugly, but fails miserably. Harry Dean is in attendance. We get bit parts for Sly Stallone and Joe Spinell. Anthony Zerbe also grabs some fun screen time. Check it out if you can get your hands on it. I'm glad I did.<br />

<br />
I've probably seen this movie close to 40 times. One of my all time faves. Watched this one again cuz I like to revisit the "classics", on occasion. Decided to watch it with an eye on writing something up for this blog. I guess after you've seen a movie so many times, the brutality gets lost on you.<br />
<br />
I would venture to say that every hispanic male between the ages of 35 and 45 could quote every line from one of two movies. American Me...or Blood In Blood Out. It all just depends on which one you saw first. I've done my own unofficial polling on this so,...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/blood-in-blood-out-bound-by-honor_zps2892bfd3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/blood-in-blood-out-bound-by-honor_zps2892bfd3.jpg" width="215" /></a></div>
<br />
American Me is a fictionalized account of the rise of La Eme (the letter M), The Mexican Mafia, within the California Penal system. The story is the rise and fall of Montoya Santana, from teenage street gang member to leader of what became the most powerful gang in Foslom Prison. A lot of drama and a lot of the aformentioned brutality. Let's see,...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Untitled_zps599b1532.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Untitled_zps599b1532.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Gang rape, immolation, A knife to the chest, A knife to the jugular, A knife in the back door, a gunshot blast to some dudes manhood, death by cocaine and sibling murder. You add it all up and that kinda puts the ear cutting in Reservoir Dogs to shame.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Santana_zps7ca9faa2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Santana_zps7ca9faa2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A documentary on this movie, found on the dvd, made it clear that La Eme was none too pleased with the making of this movie. Supposedly, Edward James Olmos name was "on a list" and a few of the real life collaborators on the film ended up dead after it's completion.<br />
<br />
Well,...that's enough to keep me from blogging anymore about this movie. <br />

The friends in question include Ian McShane, Tom Wilkinson, Stephen Dillane and John Hurt (he, of Alien chestburster fame). Truer brothers, a man could never find.<br />

The movie unfolds much like a play. We have one main focal set piece with ancillary scenes which serve to flesh out the story.<br />

So, your friends wife leaves him for another man. What do you do? You kidnap the adulterous fellow, beat him and leave him to the mercy of your jilted friend. Right? Well,...that's what happens in this movie. <br />

This is one of those movies where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. Wait,...the parts of the whole are greater than the sum. No, the parts of the sum...are...uh...nevermind.<br />
<br />
Excellent performances, by all. The ending left some viewers hanging, but it works for me. <br />

Lee Marvin plays a badass enforcer (totally cast against type) for the Chicago Irish mob who is sent to America's heartland to collect money from Mary Ann (Hackman), who is holding out on the mob.<br />
<br />
Most of the action takes place in Kansas City. Where is that? Kansas (is that too obvious a guess?)? Utah? Oklahoma?<br />
Well, wherever it is, they've got county fairs, first place ribbons, pie eating contests and women in pig pens.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/wheatfield_zpsdc4fa067.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="136" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/wheatfield_zpsdc4fa067.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
More highlights?...Hackman at his slimy-grinning-mustachio-ed best, Sissy Spacek at her young, tender best, car vs wheat baler, and Lee Marvin almost gets stabbed to death with a weiner.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/sausage_zpsfcc284c3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="136" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/sausage_zpsfcc284c3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We also get some nice down-home insults thrown about like...<br />
<br />
"You old cheese..."<br />
"You old weevil, you..."<br />
"You old...sow belly..."<br />
"You cot'damn cow dung!!!" <br />
<br />
Everyone is reluctant to use their guns in this movie until the final climactic shoot out. Who knew that a sunflower field could be so exciting? All set up against the backdrop of an impending storm.<br />
<br />
Lalo Schifrin goes bluegrass. Check it out!!!<br />

As the two titles of this film indicate, we're looking at a movie that establishes residence in both hardboiled 70's cop movies and gialli crime thrillers. <br />

This italian production is way over the top. Brutal beatdowns, transvestites, a mind blowing car chase, John Saxon, babies at knife point, cop vs helicopter and a midget, for good measure. <br />
<br />
Stuart Whitman plays a cop who will stop at nothing, and I mean nothing, to find his sisters killer. John Saxon, in a rather subdued role, plays his partner and, as always, oozes cool. This movie can be a little confusing with all the red herrings and suspects. Well, I'm confident the other elements of the film will be reason enough to revisit this film in your efforts to clear up the story line. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/cars.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/cars.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We have to talk about this car chase. I wouldn't argue with anyone who claimed that this was the greatest 70's car chase on film. It's 10 minutes of jaw dropping action. The video is on youtube (the tranny fight is on there, too). H.B. Halicki would have been proud. I know, I know. It sounded dubious to me when I first heard about it, as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/blazingmagnumpromo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/blazingmagnumpromo.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
This is great 70's trash cinema! You owe it to yourself to watch this!<br />

<i>-What, motherfucker?</i><br />
<i>-It means are you carrying a gun.</i><br />
<i>-I know what the fuck "strapped" means! What's up with this 21 Jump Street shit, man?</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/poster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/poster.jpg" width="214" /></a></div>
<br />
Made stars Jon Favreau (Bobby) and Vince Vaughn (Ricky) in what feels like a buddy-cop movie. Except, it's a buddy-wannabe-criminal movie. Actually, it a buddy-inept-wannabe-criminal movie. This movie is hilarious!<br />
<br />
Two childhood friends on the fringes of the crime world, decide to take a chance on a life of serious organized crime. It could be the change they need. Crime is easy, it's their friendship that could kill them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/theguys.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/theguys.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Peter Falk stars as the local crime boss who decides to give the boys a shot. This may be Falk's greatest role. I would equate it to Burt Reynolds role in Boogie Nights. Everyone ends up asking "Where has this guy been for the last 15 years?" <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/puss.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/puss.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The gist of the movie revolves around Bobby doing his best to take this opportunity seriously and Ricky doing his best to "roll hard" in the glamourous gangster role and screwing everything up in the process.<br />
<br />
We get a few Sopranos alums to add a little hollywood crime authenticity, and Vince Vaughn at his ad libbing best. Enjoy. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What a great flick. Loosely based on the 1947 film noir of the same name, Kiss of Death is a great crime thriller with an absolutely amazing cast. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've never seen the original. I'm sure that those who have would say that the original is better. To that, I say, "Nicholas Cage." </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nick Cage (Little Junior) would have probably been heralded as some ridiculous heretical lunatic acting god in the 40's. Actually, some consider him as such, now. The man is bench pressing strippers, sucking on an inhaler and method acting a man out of an eighteen wheeler, head first into the concrete. Exactly how film fans love him. Out of control. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd give you a rundown of the rest of the cast, but I don't really like to type. Check it out on IMDB. It's impressive. Now, consider that David Caruso was given top billing over all of them. He's not half bad, in the movie, but it just doesn't look right, on paper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
David Caruso (Jimmy Kilmartin) plays an ex con who is drawn back into "one last job" out of a debt of gratitude. Then, (didn't see this coming) everything goes wrong. More jail time, personal tragedies and a second chance later, Jimmy is working undercover to help catch Little Junior for the DA. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one is dark, gritty, street level fun that everyone should enjoy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<i>-That's his finger, allright. I seen it on him a million times."</i><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/THE-EXECUTIONER.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/THE-EXECUTIONER.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I present the Mob/Exploitation masterpiece, Duke Mitchell's The Executioner. <br />
<i> </i><br />
Duke Mitchell used to be part of an entertainment duo known as a knockoff of the Martin and Lewis act. I guess he was pretty successful. Fast forward to 1972. Duke sees The Godfather and decides, "I can do that." So he does. You gotta give the guy some credit. He wanted to make a movie, so, he sinks his life savings into the endeavor. That takes guts. Unfortunately, guts don't equal talent.<br />
<br />
Now, some movies, you just gotta let some things slide. There's gonna be a lot of sliding here, folks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/meeting.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/meeting.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Duke (writer/director/producer/star), billed here as Dominic Micelli, puts together a film that does not fail to astound. Not in the same way as The Godfather, mind you. This is a whole different "astound".<br />
<br />
Duke's character, Mimi, after having been deported to Italy with his crime boss father, decides it's time to come back to America and reestablish his family name to the streets. Usually, one man doesn't just show up and take over the mob, but Mimi, more or less, does. Of course, bodies start to mount up, mobsters feel slighted and things, generally, start to back fire.<br />
<br />
Duke takes care to write in a few juicy pro-Italian monologues for himself and then spends the meat of the movie desecrating his heritage. All in good fun, I'm sure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/killers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/killers.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, this movie is equal parts Exploitation as it is Mob movie, and those exploitation elements are grand. I will not spoil these scenes for you, since the "shock" of these elements are a huge part of the fun of experiencing this film.<br />
<br />
Try to track this one down. If, for no other reason, just to say you saw it. <br />
When it comes to naming characters, Sly Stallone has got to be the most creative and cool cat on the planet. Lets take a look...<br />
<br />
Paradise Alley - Sly Stallone as...Cosmo Carboni<br />
Cobra - Sly Stallone as...Marion Cobretti<br />
Over the Top - Sly Stallone as...Lincoln Hawk<br />
Demolition Man - Sly Stallone as...John Spartan<br />
The Specialist - Sly Stallone as...Ray Quick<br />
Daylight - Sly Stallone as...Kit Latura<br />
and now I give you...<br />
<br />
Nighthawks - Sly Stallone as....DEKE DASILVA!!!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/deke.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="172" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/deke.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Deke DaSilva</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Deke DaSilva. I just love saying that. Try it. Here. I'll type it again so you can say it with me. Deke DaSilva.<br />
<br />
This name gave writer David Shaber the opportunity to pen such classic lines as<br />
<br />
"Deke, you shoulda taken the shot."<br />
"Deke, what are you doing back here?"<br />
and<br />
"Deke?,...Deke?!?!?!,...DEEEEEEEEEEEEEKE!!!!<br />
<br />
I'd venture to say that you could add the name Deke to the beginning of any classic movie line and create, yet another, equally classic line.<br />
<br />
Deke, I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse.<br />
Deke, I'm as mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore.<br />
Deke, May the force be with you.<br />
<br />
See what I mean?<br />
<br />
So, Nighthawks is a great action/crime thriller from the early 80's. I get the sense that it just doesn't get the love it deserves. To be honest, I'd more or less forgotten about it until I found the DVD sitting on a used dvd shelf a few years back.<br />
<br />
Sly and his cop buddy Lando Calrissian are two tough New York cops who are selected to be trained in anti terrorist techniques in anticipation of the arrival of international terrorist Wulfgar, played by Rutger Hauer. I believe this was Rutger's first english speaking role and predates his role in Blade Runner by a year.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/wolfgar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="172" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/wolfgar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Man, Rutger is one ruthless villian in this movie. Blade Runner, Nighthawks and his role as The Hitcher in 86 pretty much solidified his place, in my mind, as the ultimate bad guy for the 80's.<br />
<br />
We get an appearance by Joe Spinell and The Bionic Woman, herself, Lindsay Wagner <br />
<br />
Blood, shoot outs, an airborne bus, explosions, and Helicopter vs. Sky Tram!!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/helicoptervstramcar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="173" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/helicoptervstramcar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought the soundtrack on my DVD seemed odd. Did a little research. Turns out second release had some copyright issues, so some of the music was replaced. The original DVD has the original soundtrack but it is a full frame vhs port. So, take your pick. <br />
<br />
Nighthawks 1981<br />
I rate it 9 out of 10 Deke's <br />
<br />

I served him chicken cacciatore with wine and mushrooms and all,...I mean,...knowing he was French and all. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/341321020A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="253" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/341321020A.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I felt like I should probably do some kind of write up on the movie that is this blogs namesake.<br />
<br />
The Outside Man is a French thriller, set in LA about a hit man who gets the job done and then finds out that he has now become the hunted. The meat of the film is spent trying to find out the source of the double cross.<br />
<br />
What a cast! Ann-Margret, Roy Scheider, Angie Dickinson and 20 seconds of screen time for Alex Rocco. For me, the presence of Alex Rocco can legitimize any film. So who plays the leading role? Some French dude. I'm not familiar with French cinema. Those who are, can probably spout off more info than I can regarding Jean-Louis Trintignant (aka the outside man). Whatever his credentials, his time on screen can best be described as "cool". <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/roy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="244" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/roy.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Roy Scheider is cool, too. And silent. I think the man was given a total of 5 lines of dialogue. Unfortunately, the script kind of relegated his character to being, what has to be, one of the most inefficient hit men on film. I guess he couldn't be too good at his job, or the movie would have been over in the first ten minutes. <br />
<br />
This movie also has some of the most unexciting car chases ever put on film. I guess all the money had dried up after all the actors took their salaries.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/chelovek-umer-52.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/chelovek-umer-52.jpg" width="249" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/un-homme-est-mort-affiche_5463_31950.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/un-homme-est-mort-affiche_5463_31950.jpg" width="211" /></a></div>
<br />
Despite it's shortcomings, there is something really really cool about hanging out with these characters. I mean, they are wearing suits and shooting guns, right? Plus, Angie Dickinson and Ann-Margret are excellent eye candy. I should also mention that there are 2 or 3 scenes in this film that would make any exploitation film fan proud. I won't ruin them for you.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Shootout in a funeral home? Yes, please!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
The film has some expected eurocrime leanings. You get sprinklings of humor, melodrama, noir and action, throughout. The pacing is slow to deliberate. What a great score!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Be careful watching you tube vids related to this movie. Most will give away the fun surprises. Like this movie and be cooler than all your friends. </div>

Awesome!!!<br />
<br />
Walter Matthau is mainly loved for his comedy turns. (see Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Older Men, Bad News Bears, and The Odd Couple)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Walter-Matthau-walter-matthau-7720032-320-240.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/Walter-Matthau-walter-matthau-7720032-320-240.gif" /></a></div>
<br />
Since I'm not really a big comedy guy (like my brother), I hold him close to my heart for his work during his "hard boiled" 70's movie trilogy stint. That trilogy consists of the following:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/The-Taking-of-Pelham-One-Two-Three-1974.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/The-Taking-of-Pelham-One-Two-Three-1974.jpg" width="220" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/charley_varrick.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/charley_varrick.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
and</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/lpcoverlq9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/lpcoverlq9.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Now, admittedly, I have not seen The Laughing Policeman, yet. Someone was kind enough to leave a copy on the interwebs, for me (thank you). If it's anything like Pelham and Varrick, I won't be dissappointed. <br />
<br />
Charley is essentially the leader of a small time heist gang who ends up taking down a small town bank that is, unbeknownst to them, laundering large amounts of money for the mob. <br />
<br />
YESSSS!!! How many folks have had the opportunity to use the word "unbeknownst"? I'll be honest, I had to look up the spelling.<br />
<br />
So, Charley ends up on the wrong side of the mob and they send a hitman after him. That hitman is the legendary Joe Don Baker! I Love Joe Don Baker!!! You will too, once you see Walking Tall (1973)!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/81-WALKINGTALL.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/81-WALKINGTALL.jpg" width="210" /></a></div>
<br />
Or The Outfit (1973) or Framed (1975) or The Pack (1977)<br />
<br />
...or Fletch (198?)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/MV5BMTgyNDAzNzYxNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTc1ODgwMw_V1_SX640_SY828_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/MV5BMTgyNDAzNzYxNV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwOTc1ODgwMw_V1_SX640_SY828_.jpg" width="247" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm older than you...and cooler than you.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't know that I need to say too much more about Charley Varrick. If this bare bones write up hasn't got you hooked, we ain't kin. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Check out Charley Varrick, NOW!!!</div>

Loved it!!! I loved all those cop shows. Adam 12, The Rookies, Starsky and Hutch, Hawaii Five-O, KOJAK!!! This all probably fed into my current infatuation with 70's crime movies. I would end up riding around SA with my mom and see the S.W.A.T. truck. Could not believe it. "Look mom, it's the S.W.A.T. truck!!!" <br />
<br />
"No, mijo, that's UPS." <br />
<br />
Huh? <br />
<br />
What are you, crazy? You just watched the latest episode with me. It's the S.W.A.T. truck!! <br />
<br />
...kids are stupid.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The theme song still gives me goosebumps. Deaftonguehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15441130853378703643noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8415982615207379345.post-36731270648007613592012-11-26T19:25:00.000-08:002012-11-26T19:26:20.077-08:00Joe Spinell (1936-1989)Who?<br />
<br />
Oh you know him. You just don't know it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/image-10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm307/deaftongue/image-10.jpg" width="218" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
With the upcoming remake of Maniac (1980), word should be getting around about this legendary character actor. The remake stars Elijah Wood and I just don't see how he's gonna pull it off. He's got to fill the shoes of Joe Spinell?!?!?!? JOE SPINELL!!!<br />
<br />
I hope he can pull it off, but my expectations are pretty low. Anyway, here are a few screen caps of the man, himself, and a video tribute courtesy of you tube enjoy.<br />
